THE LEGACY OF CANNED SOCKEYE RUNS DEEP IN BRISTOL BAY
It remains a major stronghold of Alaska’s – and indeed America’s – rich cannery history. Tracing its roots back to 1884 when the Arctic Packing Company cannery, located at the mouth of Nushagak River, sealed its first pack of salmon, the Bristol Bay canned salmon industry has towed the line through thick and thin for more than 130 years.
While recipes of yesteryear frequently featured this rich red salmon in loaves and casseroles, canned sockeye is emerging as a contemporary powerhouse delivering the one-two punch of convenience and nutrition in recipes such as sandwiches, spicy tacos, superfood salads, handheld wraps, and warming chowders and soups.
