KNOW YOUR FISHERMAN
COLE KING

How do you describe the Bristol Bay waters & fishery to those who’ve never been?
Bristol Bay is truly The Last Frontier. Be prepared to take a trip back in time. You are connected to only the moment with minimal distractions from the digital world. You have the privilege to connect with nature in a way that only Alaska and Bristol Bay can offer. Days that are flat calm can turn into heavy winds and big waves with a snap of a finger.
Whom do you typically fish with? Tell us about your crew.
I fish with my captain and cousin Landon Libby. Since I’ve been on deck we have had a number of others join us but for the last decade it’s been the two of us.
Do you have any unique fishing traditions that you do during the season?
We typically will cut and cook the first first of the season. We are thankful for every fish we get, but there is no better way to start the season than with a fresh sockeye straight from the water and onto the stove.
Why should people choose Bristol Bay sockeye salmon?
People should choose Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon because it is simply the best. All the sockeye harvested are from small family operations and handled with care. When you buy Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon you are choosing a sustainably harvested product that ensures a healthy run year after year.
What has fishing in Bristol Bay taught you?
Fishing in Bristol Bay has taught me everything. You have to be quick on your feet, learn to troubleshoot on the fly, and be extremely resourceful. I take everything I learn from fishing home with me and whenever I think something is too hard I just reflect on the past seasons and tell myself, if you can get through that you can get through anything.
What is your favorite way to prepare Bristol Bay sockeye salmon?
My favorite way to prepare Bristol Bay sockeye is on the grill; just throw on a little oil, salt and pepper and eat with family.
What has fishing in Bristol Bay meant to you and/or your family, what has it provided in terms of past, present, or future opportunities?
Bristol Bay to me means family. I have had the chance to fish with my mom, aunt, uncle, four cousins, and countless numbers of friends. Fishing has presented a number of opportunities for my mom and me as well. We both are starting our own ventures in order to keep fishing in the family. My mom just purchased a setnet permit and I will be taking over my cousin’s boat this next season.
